A thorough renovation
Kommandøren was converted from a cargo ship to a tour ship in 1972-1974. Over the past several months, Hvide Sande Shipyard has extended its life so that it can continue sailing for many years to come.
This work has included replacing the frames and planking, as well as manufacturing a new 20-meter main mast.
As part of the recent renovations at Hvide Sande Shipyard, extensive work was carried out on the deckhouse. The deckhouse frame was thoroughly repaired to ensure its structural integrity and durability.
Additionally, a new deck was built on top of the deckhouse to further improve the ship’s functionality and provide a solid foundation for future adventures. These improvements will ensure that Kommandøren is ready for many more years of service as a tour ship.
As part of the comprehensive renovation, the ship’s hydraulic system and plumbing were carefully serviced and partially replaced. The work focused on enhancing functionality, ensuring safety, and promoting the long-term durability of these vital onboard systems.

Over 100 years of seamanship
The wooden hull has ensured the ship’s longevity for more than a century. Measuring around 20 meters in length and 5 meters in width, with a draught of 2 meter, Kommandøren is a prime example of traditional Danish shipbuilding. With an 84 kW Ford Sea Panther main engine, the ship can sail at around 7 knots.
Knowhow and skills at the shipyard
“We came to Hvide Sande Shipyard because the skills are here for this type of boat. We have good shipyards and boatyards in Scotland, but they are used to doing scottish fishing vessels, and not this type of boat. So we bring it here because the guys here are familiar with the baltic trader. And because she so old we want to make sure we get it right. And looking at what we took out from the boat, much of it was original, so this is the biggest refit that she had in a 135 years.”
Malcolm Craig, owner and captain on Kommandøren

From cargo ship to tour boat
Kommandøren is a galleass that was first launched in Karrebæksminde in 1891. Originally built for cargo shipping, the ship had a load capacity of 49 tonnes and was once part of the merchant fleet along the Danish coast. Today, Kommandøren no longer sails with cargo, but with passengers as a tour ship.
